and when he himself believed it.
Why does he not act immediately?

Ha!
Beyond these questions about the play and its characters lie deeper issues.
Issues of the rightness of revenge, of how to achieve an ethical life,
how to live in a world where tears and sorrow, loving smiles, kind words,
because of the actions that a man can take.
Hamlet's world is cold and bleak because almost no one or nothing could be trusted.
Still, this world and Hamlet himself continue to draw us into them, speaking to all generations
of its own problems.
It's a play that seems particularly pertinent today,
as it has been particularly pertinent in countless generations before our time.
Next week we move on to Shakespeare, Comedy's Twelfth Night, and Comedy of Errors.
I suggest you read one of the two, being that you'll have an option for either on your midterm exams, which are in three weeks.
